the barack obama presidential campaign introduced a new site last week, "fightthesmears.com", that it hopes will debunk persistent myths about the senator: that he's a muslim, that he won't say the pledge of allegiance, etc.
"slate" thinks instead that restating the myths often reinforces them, no matter how persuasively they've been refuted; then, rather than restate untruths about obama, the campaign would do better to start some rumors of its own, like:
- barack obama goes to church every morning. he goes to church every afternoon. he goes to church every evening. he is in the church right now.
- barack obama's skin is the color of american soil.
- barack obama wears a flag pin at all times. even in the shower.
- every weekend, barack and michelle take their daughters hunting.
- barack obama says that americans cling to guns and religion because they are awesome.

a few months ago, "reverse graffiti" artist moose traveled to san francisco where he created a mural by cleaning grime from the walls of the city's broadway tunnel. documentary filmmaker doug pray made a short film about the artwork. it seems to be a bit of viral propaganda for a "green" cleaning supply company, but it's still a great mini documentary. the REVERSE GRAFFITI PROJECT.

second post of the day dedicated to the italian artist blu. his billboard above, called occupation/endless war, is in turnham green tube station and green lanes (london), and forms part of the nakba60 exhibition, where artists express solidarity with palestine via london billboards. nakba, or "day of the catastrophe" is the establishment of the state of israel involved the destruction of over 530 palestinian towns and villages and the expulsion of about two-thirds of the indigenous palestinian arab population from their homes and lands to pave the way for the establishment of a jewish state, with a jewish majority.

"don't vote for a joke, vote for london", says ken livingstone, two days before the elections. his messages became harsher toward boris johnson lately, while he focused his speeches on his plans to fight crime and making londoners safer. as everywhere, elections are won on security issues. many volunteers pro-ken can be seen these days leafleting tube stations and streets or even putting up posters in their front window.
as residents and EU citizens we can vote for london's mayor as well; it's just gonna be hard to help labour in westminster, according to 2004 election results.

a couple of russian-born conceptual artists had determined, via a poll of listeners, what the most unappealing kinds of music were, then created a piece embodying all of them. for example, people hate songs about holidays, choirs, and kids singing. so there was a passage where a children's chorus singing about labor day. the most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition.

brian sack of "banterist" offered his services on ebay a few months ago to "drive someone crazy" with a series of postcards from poland. sack promised that "these postcards will be rant-ravingly insane, yet they will be peppered with unmistakable personal details about the addressee. details you will provide me." the postcards would be signed illegibly. now that they were sent and received and the joke finally revealed to the recipient, sack shares the postcards now on his site.

con lo slogan "la forza di un pensiero libero" la ex manager statale deborah bergamini, protagonista dell'inciucio raiset, e' dunque candidata alla camera dei deputati per il PDL nel collegio della toscana. la sua agenda elettorale, di qui al voto, e' alquanto scarna, se si eccettuano gli incontri con "azzurro donna" e non ben specificati "gruppi di elettori" in hotel cinque stelle della riviera versiliese.
fortunatamente, nella sezione "pensiero", la bergamini ci illumina con una lectio magistralis sull' auctoritas della politica, "quell'elemento intangibile che dà un valore trascendente alle dinamiche della società". gliene siamo grati. un po' meno grati allo stato che ha risolto mesi fa il suo rapporto di lavoro (inciuci tra manager mediaset e dirigenti della tv pubblica compresi) con una lauta liquidazione, 390mila euro. finanziata col nostro denaro.

come residenti italiani all'estero abbiamo gia' votato qualche giorno fa. nell'immagine qui sopra la scheda elettorale per la camera dei deputati, la quale, nella circoscrizione estero, non sembra di cosi' difficile lettura come in italia. da notare il logo di "valori e futuro", il movimento-partito di emanuele filiberto di savoia, su cui abbiamo gia' ironizzato a piu' riprese, e lo spazio per esprimere un massimo di due preferenze. nel flickr dell'arpia blog le altre immagini delle schede. non troverete quelle con il voto espresso, foto comunque scattate, visto che abbiamo votato nell'intimita' della nostra cucina, prima di imbustare il tutto e spedire al consolato, nella speranza che nulla venga perduto o manomesso. beh, buon voto a tutti!

il blog di gianfranco miccichè è fonte inesauribile di sghignazzi. dopo la sua "rinuncia" a correre per la presidenza della regione sicilia, nonostante avesse detto poco prima che sarebbe andato avanti, spuntano i commenti maligni dei lettori, come: "gianfranco, fonda il partito dello zucchero a velo".
"dagospia" poi racconta che al cronista che gli chiede se l'appoggio di cuffaro a lombardo possa creare qualche imbarazzo a livello nazionale al PDL, miccichè risponde con una battuta ironica: “evidentemente c'è un motivo per cui kafka è nato a vienna e pirandello è nato in sicilia".
evidentemente c'è anche un motivo per cui micciché ignora che kafka è nato a praga.

adesso deborah bergamini si diletta di politica e dalle pagine de "il riformista" (paolo franchi ha paura del ritorno di antonio polito e si circonda di firme "note"?) lancia le sue profonde verità: "c’e’ da aspettarsi ancora una volta una campagna elettorale giocata sugli sterili toni del’antiberlusconismo, col paradosso che ad attaccare berlusconi saranno questa volta proprio i suoi ex alleati democristiani. un’eventualità che non porterà benefici a nessuno, ma danno a tutti. veltroni, per aggiudicarsi i 400 mila voti che si dice la bonino sia in grado di esprimere, si e’ assunto il rischio di perdere l’appoggio dei suoi elettori moderati."

charles booth's victorian "poverty maps" of london from 1886 to 1903 used survey data to visually represent the quality of life for londoners across a city that was characterized by enormous economic disparity. the LSE maintains an archive of the maps, zoomable and overlaid with the contemporary london map. the maps are colored from black (lowest class, semi-criminal) to yellow (upper classes, wealthy).

gianfranco miccichè insiste per essere il candidato presidente per il PDL in sicilia, o, se berlusconi scegliesse di appoggiare lombardo, pretende un ministero in cambio (per il mezzogiorno, si dice). insomma, un ricatto bello e buono che si gioca su uno scambio di poltrone. ciononostante miccichè, sul suo blog, che peraltro sembra scritto da un bambino, dice: "la partita è aperta e vi confermo che, comunque vadano le cose, sarò schierato contro il cuffarismo".
ma miccichè non ha appoggiato due legislature cuffaro, l'ultima da presidente dell'assemblea regionale? e il "cuffarismo" ovvero i favori per voti e viceversa, non è la stessa pratica che sta usando in queste ore di trattative?

la "cosa bianca" non è ancora nata ma ha già un centro di discussione online dal nome lungimirante: "benecomune". la forte impronta terzista e cattolico-rigorista è animata da leonardo becchetti, docente di economia politica e da due aclisti: michele rizzi, vicepresidente nazionale, e cristian carrara, ex leader dei giovani. tutti e tre tra gli organizzatori del family day e molto legati a savino pezzotta.
intanto, occhio a mario baccini: innanzitutto conta molto di più di quanto casini, infastidito alla sua uscita dall'UDC, abbia fatto intendere con un'alzata di spalle.
pare che baccini abbia chiuso un accordo con raffaele lombardo, capobastone siciliano e leader del "movimento per le autonomie", che avrebbe lasciato clemente mastella. l’udeur sarebbe giunto al capolinea e in compenso, tutti gli orfani del partito finirebbero dritti nel neonato movimento centrista.

la battaglia nelle file repubblicane entra nel vivo non solo nelle urne delle primarie, ma con nuovissime uscite in libreria. “heroic conservatism” di mike gerson (cristiano evangelico e speech writer di bush dal 2001 al 2006) che propone, guardacaso, una riedizione del bushismo. “comeback, conservatism that can win again” di david frum spiega come la crociata anti tasse non sia più decisiva come ai tempi di reagan, “leave us alone: getting the government’s hands off our money, our guns, our lives” di grover norquist considera il male assoluto ogni tipo di intervento statale, mentre “grand new party: how republicans can win the working class and save the american dream” di ross douthat e reihan salam, invita ad invadere il campo democratico e provare a offrire sicurezza sociale alla working class, invece che continuare ad attuare ricette liberiste in un paese già completamente liberalizzato.
in ogni caso, la ricetta per risorgere tutto sommato è semplice, scrivono i principali analisti conservatori, ed è quella di trovare il giusto equilibrio tra le diverse anime. certo che tra liberisti e evangelici, conservatori sudisti, fan della "nation greatness", neocon e paleocon, non è certo cosa facile.
